1974 · Kailua Beach
In 1974 some enthusiastic windsurfing friends adopted the name "Windsurfing Hawaii" from a hi-performance equipment rental and surfschool on Kailua Beach (Oahu). Every day the troup was on the water, right in front of their house, testing and developing new techniques. This small group of windsurfers from Kailua drove forward the development of windsurfing.
Innovation was happening daily and we were all helping each other and giving each other ideas, and we'd brainstorm and go out and do this and the next day the guy would do it a little better, you know, that's how all this things came out. If something didn't work we just rushed home and changed it or we'd whip put the saw and cut it right there at the beach.
"Windsurfing Hawaii" gained international recognition for its above-average products and above all its innovations. In 1975 we developed a harness and 1976 strong wind sails. In 1977, the foot straps were added which finally made it possible to jump without losing the board.
The first footstraps were webbing with a neoprene "jacket" or tube around the webbing to protect the tops of the feet. The ends of the webbing were tied to surfboard leash inserts at first. Later, we started laminating them onto the skin of the boards and finally, began building threaded inserts into the decks of the custom boards. In 1979 we came with the adjustable booms and in 1980 with the adjustable mast extensions on the market.

Close to the core
Windsurfing Hawaii is being brought back with deep respect for where it all began. For us, this is not simply about reviving a name from the past. It is about honoring a spirit, a way of life, and a piece of beach culture that has inspired people for decades.
As we shape the future of Windsurfing Hawaii, we pay close attention to the thoughts and comments of original founders and people connected to the early days of the brand. Their perspective matters to us. Not because we want to recreate the past exactly as it was, but because we want to remain close to the original feeling, values and character that made Windsurfing Hawaii special in the first place.
To us, Windsurfing Hawaii has always been about more than products. It is about freedom, creativity, friendship, curiosity, respect, and the simple joy of being in and around the ocean. It is about the beach, the wind, the waves, and the kind of culture that grows when people share a passion and treat each other in the right way. The way we speak to one another, support one another, and move through the world matters. That spirit is part of what we want to carry forward.
We also believe that any true connection to this brand should include respect for nature and the environment around us. The ocean, the coastline, the wind and the natural world are not just a backdrop to the story — they are part of its foundation. We want to approach this brand with care for that environment, and with appreciation for the balance, openness and sense of place that gave birth to this culture in the first place.
Windsurfing Hawaii is, by origin, a Hawaiian brand. Hawaii is part of the United States, and the roots of the brand belong to that unique island world and its beach culture. At the same time, it is important to say clearly that, at this moment, we are not operationally connected to the United States. The current initiative is independent and is driven by people who deeply respect the heritage, values and original spirit of Windsurfing Hawaii.
Our intention is not to turn the past into hype, nor to build something empty around nostalgia. We simply want to help preserve something that felt real then and still feels real now: a certain energy, a certain culture, and a certain way of looking at life. By listening carefully, staying thoughtful in our choices, and keeping respect for the roots, for nature, and for one another at the center, we hope to carry that spirit forward in an honest way.
Not for hype. For the stoke. And with respect for the roots, the environment, and each other.
